"Birdman"
Medium Date Framed Size Image Size
Oil Pastel/Ink on Artist Board 1973 24"H x 24"W 15-3/4H x 15-3/4"W
From Michael Babcock: This figure is reminiscent of several other paintings by Susan, showing a male figure surrounded by numerous birds. In an interview she mentioned this piece as belonging to “...my beginning work, as it were, in oil pastel” and it was one of the first large works she painted. Like many of her pieces, it reflects her love of nature; she said: "Always birds and nature have been compelling to me.” She has provided the central figure with an elegantly draped robe with sgraffito embroidery detail around the edges. As with many other pieces, the figure is framed in a forest setting with the sky and a moon in the background. As Susan has said the moon was “almost like a signature, almost like a finishing, like a seal that says it’s done.”

TPG: A beautiful and contemplative work. Finely detailed and richly colored Owls, numerous songbirds and a Morning Dove commune with their forest friends in this peaceful, quiet and wonderfully portrayed scene.

This original work has been re-framed with a custom wood frame. Archival double-matted with a linen top mat and paper bottom mat. Acid-free materials throughout and re-glazed with Conservation Clear, Tru-Vue UV protective glass. Signed by Susan Seddon Boulet, bottom-left, Dated MAR 73.
