From Michael Babcock: Susan was fond of portraying couples, particularly in the 1970s. The artists preferred myth, later in life, was Psyche & Eros. Susan once said she was “fairly romantic by nature” and one reason for the myth’s appeal was, she said, “it held a strong element of search and romance, of love triumphing over everything, and love making everything OK in the end.” She saw the myth as a story of the coming together of the feminine and the masculine. Later Susan came to see her work both as a snapshot of where she was in her life and also, “perhaps my own wish for myself, or my own looking into what I might like to become.” She said: “I’m sure that everything is related to whatever was going on in my life. Whether it’s couples or mother and children or . . . It’s all sort of connected there.” There’s a lovely use of ink providing texture particularly on the man’s garment.

TPG: Encircled by a stand of trees and under the beautifully detailed forest canopy, a couple shares their mutual promise. A pair of birds above and an elusive Unicorn, (a symbol of magic, purity, innocence and healing), hidden in the forest below, are present for this sacred moment.

This original work has been re-framed with an antiqued and gilt, custom wood frame. Archival double-matted with linen under mat and linen top mat.
