"Satyr - Title unknown"
Medium Date Framed Size Image Size
Oil Pastel/Ink on Artist Board 1972 17-1/4"H x 17-1/4"W 9-3/4"Diameter
From Michael Babcock: From the beginning of her professional career, Greek Mythology provided a rich source of subject matter for Susan. Here is one of a number of satyrs that she painted from 1972 to 1974. Satyrs were male nature spirits, originally with feet resembling those of a horse but over time were later portrayed as those of a goat, as we see here. They were protectors of the natural world, often found near ponds, and were known as lovers of wine, music, dancing, and women. It is explained in early writings that Satyrs could speak to animals, and held deep respect for nature and everything in it. They were companions of the god Dionysus and were believed to inhabit remote locales, such as woodlands, mountains, and pastures. From their origin in Greek mythology they often appear in works of children’s literature, another rich source for Susan, where they are usually referred to as “fauns.”

TPG: With pan pipe by his side a Satyr sits reflectively in Susan’s colorful forest home. There is an interesting “fish eye lens” distortion to the horizon line of trees. Another example of how Susan used curved lines in her work to move the viewers eye around the piece.

This original work has been re-framed with an antiqued gilt custom wood frame. Archival triple-matted with suede bottom mat and middle mats and a linen top mat. Acid-free materials throughout and re-glazed with Conservation Clear, Tru-Vue, UV protective glass. Signed by Susan Seddon-Boulet bottom-center. Dated Sept 72.
